Run-DMC honors Jam Master Jay with limited edition vinyl record
Run-DMC is paying tribute to their fallen brother and music icon Jam Master Jay with a limited edition 12” vinyl.
Created in partnership with 12on12, the release is their first in a series of collaborations that celebrate the 35th anniversary of their seminal album, Raising Hell. The group dedicates this vinyl record in Jam Master Jay’s honor, and is limited to only 500 hand-numbered editions.
The 12” is presented with the bespoke artwork of rising L.A. artist Reena “RT” Tolentino and embodies the story of Run-DMC’s legacy, including a handpicked tracklisting that features song that have inspired, affected and changed the music of the celebrated group. Cuts from early rap trailblazers like The Sugarhill Gang and Afrika Bambaataa join the group’s selection, along with tracks that now serve as the sonic foundations of the hip-hop sound that emerged and evolved in New York in the early 1980s.
“There are so many things that influence and inspire us. Music is one of them. It’s a never ending process,” Run-DMC said in a statement. “We are happy to showcase where some of it comes from! It all starts and ends with vinyl! If it ain’t vinyl…Then it ain’t vinyl!”
The 12on12 x Run-DMC vinyl is available now on the official 12on12 webstore for $225 USD.
Elsewhere in music, Gorillaz have announced a series of livestream shows with a 14-piece band.
